Blessings and prayers for this week.
This week, we have been learning about Islam, as part of our study of other faiths. Across the school, we talked about the importance of making time to learn about others in this way.
The children commented:
‘We do this so that when we go to our new school if we meet friends who are not Christian, we will understand each other better ’ – Year 6.
‘It helps us care and respect each other’ – Year 2.
The children have been very enthusiastic, recognising that while there are differences between it and Christianity, there are also similarities.
When learning about Islam at St Bede’s, we are lucky to have some pupils in classes who can help us deepen our understanding. It was wonderful seeing children in Year 3 being captivated by a demonstration from one of their classmates about Wudu – the washing process before prayer.
Year 6 were examining the five pillars of Islam – the worship and actions that all Muslims carry out in their life. The pillar that impressed the children most was ‘Zakat’ – charity – giving 2.5% of earnings each year. They thought it really showed kindness and compassion for others and it the children thought it was something from which they could learn.
The prayers which have been appearing in our Reflective Room have been increasingly moving and beautiful. Here is one from Tolu, in Year 6, aimed at helping those who are finding things difficult at the moment:
‘Heavenly Father, Please cleanse us of our sins. Help us to purify our hearts, so we can shine in Jesus’ light. Please keep us safe in the darkest times of our lives and always be there when we need you. We will always love you deeply, just as you love us. Let our hearts bind as one in your glory.
Lord in your mercy’
God bless
