‘He took bread, said the blessing,
broke it; and, gave it to them, saying
said, ‘This is my body.’
On Sunday, we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi.
Corpus Christi is Latin for the Body of Christ. Some people would say that this is celebrated during Passion Week, when we recall the meal of Jesus’ Last Supper; but, it was decided by the Church to create a separate feast day to celebrate this most important event and to then reflect on the Eucharist we receive in the Mass.
The Gospel on Sunday is seen as one of the most important miracles of Jesus; it is the only miracle story apart from the Resurrection that is found in all four gospels: The feeding of the five thousand. In Luke’s account, Jesus had been speaking to a huge crowd of people and they had nothing to eat. His disciples were going to send them away, but Jesus refused and, taking two fish and five loaves, ‘ thanked God’ and asked the disciples to share the food. Miraculously all had enough to eat with 12 baskets left over. Jesus had given his disciples the the news of how we should always consider the needs of others and always share what we have.
In the same way, we have been thinking in Y5 and Y6 about how we can consider the needs of others in how we share our food in the world. The children examined the injustices that occur in how food is produced in the world and as part of our Faith in action created messages showing how, alongside CAFOD, we feel about the inequalities in food distribution for the poorest members of our world.
Pope Francis this week said:
‘Jesus speaks silently in the mystery of the Eucharist and constantly reminds us that he wants to go out of our way and turn his life not into our possession but the gift given to him and to others.’
In other words, use our life to ‘be a light in the darkness’. As Mya– Renee of Y1 beautifully said ‘to not break hearts, care!’
Jesus, you fed the hungry crowds. Open our eyes to the needs of others and help us to follow your example of love and service. Amen.
Prayers and blessings this weekend
